Femur Fracture

Multi-locking Humeral nails are intended to be used in simple as well as complex fractures, and have multiple locking options. They offer a widespread system for fixation of humeral fractures. The system encompasses short and long nails and screws, with multiple locking options for treatment of simple as well as complex fractures of the proximal humerus and the humeral shaft.

The long, straight portion of the thigh bone is called the femoral shaft. A crack or breakage in the femoral shaft is called a femoral shaft fracture. Most of the femoral shaft fractures require surgical treatment.

Symptoms of Femoral Shaft Fracture:

Fracture in the thigh bone or femur is characterized by severe pain in the affected leg, so much so that one cannot put any weight on the leg. Also, the affected leg would look deformed, usually shorter than the normal leg. It will also not look straight.
The fracture is usually diagnosed with radiographs or X-Rays.

Causes of Femur Fracture:

Since the femur is the strongest bone in our body, it takes a lot to break this bone. A fracture in the femur usually results from a high energy blow or collision. The most common example would be a motor vehicle accident, or being hit by a motor vehicle.

Types of Femoral Fractures:

Femoral fractures are divided into 4 types -

A. Stress Fracture-

The fracture is reduced and fixed preliminarily using K-wires and lag screws. The anatomic reduction can be confirmed using fluoroscopy. It has to be taken care that no screws are penetrating the articular surfaces.

C. Partial Fracture –

As indicated by the name, this type of fracture refers to the partial breakage, i.e., cracking of the bone, but not complete breakage.

B. Severe Impaction Fractures –

As the name suggests, this fracture happens when there is a severe impact on the thigh bone from both the sides, and the bones end up breaking into multiple fragments again, jamming into each other.

D. Complete Displaced Fracture:

In this type of fracture, the femur is broken into two or more pieces, and the pieces are not aligned as per the original position.

Treatment:

Most of the femoral fractures require surgery. It is very rare that the femoral fracture is treated without surgeries, which usually happens in case of small children where doctors put a cast to treat the fracture.

The surgical treatment requires to be started within 24-48 hours of the accident. While preparing for the surgery, the doctors usually place the broken leg on to a splint or in traction to maintain the length of the leg.

External Fixation: In this procedure, specialized metal pins and screws are placed externally above and below the site of fracture, and these pins and screws are attached to a bar outside the skin. This structure helps to hold the bone in position.

Usually, external fixation is a temporary treatment for broken femur, when the patient is not ready for a long and complicated surgical procedure. Once the patient is medically and physically ready for the surgery, the external fixators are removed and internal fixation is done.

Intramedullary nailing: During this procedure, a specifically designed metal rod is inserted into the femur which passes across the fracture to keep it in position. These rods are usually made of titanium, and come in various sizes and lengths to suit the patient’s requirement.

Plates and screws: Plates and screws are used when intramedullary screws are not possible. In this type of arrangement, the broken bones are first repositioned into their normal position and held together with screws and plates fixed to the outer surface of the bone.
